Twinkie was born from the ashes of The Moominhallams, founded by Moo on bass, and James on guitar, finding Vicky a young drummer from Ashbourne, and Debbie another guitarist, ejectee from a local drone rock outfit called Pathfinder. They became twinkie and played a few gigs together, did a dodgy demo, then Vicky left.

The drums became the job of the legendary Pete Hodbod. They played quite a lot of gigs around Derby, became quite renowned for their 'shambolic live performances' and apparently people would come to see them 'for a laugh'. Poor old twinkie, unloved and with nowhere to go... James decided he'd had enough and left. A guitarist was needed. By utter fluke, the following October, in the local indie disco in Derby, a certain someone came over to Moo to say hello, this person recognised him from Reading Festival... it was Dave! Dave had met a rather drunken Moo there, who was smashed on vodka and the heat. Dave was in Derby for his birthday with a friend who lived there. Dave played the guitar. Overcoming transport difficulties, (Dave lives in Walsall), he started coming over to practices.

The band did numerous gigs with this line up, mainly in Derby but getting out now and then. A demo was recorded which was OK... a few people liked it. It was about this time that they started getting their act together. Twinkie did some local radio shows, including a whole live broadcast - tapes still exist of this drunken chaos. But the playing and the songs were getting better.

In August 1996, they were coaxed in to the studio in Redditch, and recorded My Favourite Animal Is The Whyte Tyga and Social Faux Pas. Most people were surprised how well they turned out! These tracks became part of the Scaramouche EP. Shortly after it's release Pete left the band to pursue his career as a computer games designer.

And again, Lady Luck weaved her way. Elvis had met Cable, one of Derby's finest ever bands, and had enquired about drumming opportunities in Derby. He drove down from the Highlands to come and live here in 1997 and this is how the band remains to this day.
